How to Get The German Driver’s License (der Führerschein)
A step-by-step guide (To Convert Non-EU Licence)
As you all have heard the stories that how difficult and complicated it is to get the drivers license in Germany. You have to learn more than 1000 questions for the "Theory Test" and you need a lot of documents to apply for the driving license and it will take months in the whole process and worst of all, it costs too much.
Is this all true? Well Yes and No. If you are aware of the process, it is easy and yes if you don't pass the tests in the first attempt, it is going to cost you more.
But No Worries!! We are here to help you and tell you all about the process.
Documents:-
You need to have or prepare the following documents:
1. Your original driving license from your home country.
2. German translation of the license with the stamp of the approved translator.
3. Latest Eye Test. (www.primeros.de)
5. Passport size photo. (www.primeros.de)
6. Passport and German identity card (Personalausweis).
7. Registration letter from Driving school (Go to the Driving school you like and ask them to give you this certificate, Some of the schools will charge you for the registration and some will not).
8. Confirmation of your first registration (Anmeldung) as a resident in Germany (if this was not done in the city where you are applying).
Where To Apply:-
Normally, you have to go to the driver’s license office (Führerscheinstelle) at the nearest Bürgeramt (district city hall) or Rathaus (city hall).
What to Do there?
Submit all your documents, and the fees (approx. 37 Euros).
If everything goes well, within a week or two, the Führerscheinstelle will send you a letter to approving your request to change the driving license and proceed with the tests.
Preparation:-
To prepare for the theory you the following options:-
1. Take classes at the Driving School.
2. Learn yourself using the Android application (You can buy the application from the Driving school or from the App Store - available in many Languages including English).
Keep on learning and practicing all the questions(more than 10000) till you feel confident.
Book an appointment for the theory test (Driving school will do this for you).
Pay the Fees for theory and practical test(You will receive a letter at your address with the amount you have to pay).
Give the Theory test (available in many Languages including English).
The "Practical Test":-
Once you pass the theory test you can start your practical lessons.
It should not take much time as you already know driving but the tricky part here is remembering all the rules you learned during the theory exam.
One lesson is of 45 mins and you can combine 2 lessons to practice for 1.5 hours at once.
Once you are confident, ask the driving school to book a practical test appointment for you.
The final practical test is for 45 minutes and you cannot make any major mistake in this test.
At the end of the test, the examiner will tell you the result and if you pass you can directly go to the Führerscheinstelle to collect your German driving license.
Note:- You have to give away your original license from your home country to get the German License.
